The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Civilian Employment measure is a monthly estimate of the number of people aged 16 years and older who are employed in the civilian noninstitutional population. The civilian noninstitutional population excludes members of the armed forces, people in correctional facilities, nursing homes, and other institutions, and people under 16 years of age. The Civilian Employment measure is based on a survey of about 60,000 households, called the Current Population Survey (CPS), which is conducted by the Census Bureau for the BLS¹.

According to the latest data, Civilian Employment was **154.6 million** in April 2023, up by **253,000** from March 2023². The Civilian Employment measure is different from the Nonfarm Payroll Employment measure, which is based on a survey of about 666,000 worksites and covers workers who receive pay for any part of the pay period that includes the 12th of the month³. Nonfarm Payroll Employment was **152.5 million** in April 2023, up by **253,000** from March 2023³.
